OWLS FALL TO LUMBERJACKS

WARREN - The McGehee Owls proved that they can compete with the elite of the 8-4A Conference on Friday. But they just couldn't find the end zone.

The Owls outgained Warren 221-199 and maintained possession for more than 70 percent of the game. But losing four fumbles, including two in the red zone and another that was returned for a touchdown, proved to be too much to overcome as they lost 14-0 in a pivotal 8-4A Conference showdown at Jim E. Hurley Jr. Stadium.

SECOND-QUARTER SPURT LIFTS 'CATS OVER HOGS

Following Watson Chapel's third touchdown of the second quarter, kicker Collin Massanelli lined up for the extra point and wide receiver Kyle Coleman kneeled down to hold. When the snap tumbled low Coleman, a junior wide receiver, picked it up and took off sprinting for the right corner of the end zone.

Coleman made it there just before three Texarkana defenders for the successful conversion, completing a play that showed both the versatility that Coleman brings to the Wildcats and just how well things were going for the home team on Friday.

ZEBRAS TRAMPLE 'JACKETS

Claude Johnson threw two first-quarter touchdown passes and Pine Bluff scored three more times in the second quarter as it cruised to a 42-6 win over Sheridan on Friday night at Jordan Stadium.

LITTLE ROCK - After his game Friday night, White Hall coach Mike Vaughn admitted that his opponent wasn't who he thought they were.

Playing a team with only one victory on the season, Vaughn might have half expected a mercy-rule beating. Instead, what he got was a game where his team struggled to pull away from an ever-improving Little Rock McClellan Crimson Lion squad in a 40-28 Bulldog victory Friday night at Lions Stadium.

BEARDEN BRUTALIZES BEARS 46-8

BEARDEN - The top-ranked Bearden Bears converted three first-quarter interceptions into touchdowns and used a nice mixture of run-and-pass to roll past the Woodlawn Bears, 46-8, on Friday night to clinch the 8-2A Conference championship at Bearden's Rogers Field.

WILDCATS ROLL PAST COUGARS

RISON - Generating over 450 yards of offense on a sloppy gridiron, the Rison Wildcats tuned up for the stretch run of the 7-3A Conference race by routing the Lafayette County Cougars, 49-6 on Friday night.

It was Rison's sixth straight win, as the Wildcats improved to 5-0 in the conference and 7-1 overall. The loss dropped Lafayette County to 1-4 in the conference and 2-6 on the season.

STAR CITY PELTS THE BEAVERS, 48-18

LAKE VILLAGE - The Star City Bulldogs came in to Beaver Stadium Friday night with a chance to push their record to 7-1 and gain sole possession of second place in the 8-4A Conference with a victory over the Lakeside Beavers. That is exactly what the Bulldogs accomplished with a dominating 48-18 victory over the Beavers. With the win, Star City clinches its first playoff berth since 2004.

BILLIES BEAT BEARS, REMAIN UNBEATEN

Before its high-powered offense ever stepped onto Hyatt Field on Friday night, Monticello already had a two-touchdown lead. Jordan Tilley returned the opening kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown and Joe Carmical returned an interception 45 yards for another score jump-starting the Billies to a 35-7 win over Sylvan Hills.
